David L. Born 1923 – 2018
Whitesboro

David L. Born, 94, of Whitesboro, NY died Thursday, November 29th at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his family at his side.

He was born in Syracuse on December 11, 1923 to Henry A. and Theresa (Harlfinger) Born. He attended Most Holy Rosary School from kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated from high school in 1941. In 1948 he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the college of Forestry at Syracuse University, followed by a Master’s in chemical engineering in 1950. During World War II Mr. Born completed his pilot’s training in April of 1944. He then flew the P51 fighter as escort for bombers over Germany in 1944 and 1945. Mr. Born remained active in the 434th squadron reunions. He served in the Air National Guard as a fighter pilot until 1955, and as a civil engineer until his retirement with a rank of Major in 1962. Mr. Born’s service in the guard included an 11-month activation with deployment to France during the Berlin Wall Crisis.

On September 29, 1951 he was united in marriage Mary Elizabeth Burns. The couple moved to Whitesboro in the mid-1950s. She passed away in August of 2000. Mr. Born worked at H. Waterbury and Sons in Oriskany for 24 years doing general testing and development work. He then worked for 10 years at Niagara Lockport, calling on customers as a troubleshooter and retired in 1989. At the age of 50 he quit smoking and began a fitness campaign that continued into his 80s. Mr. Born competed in the New York City marathon and 5 other marathons as well as 19 of the first 21 Boilermakers.

In 1991 he began tutoring at St. Paul’s Elementary School, giving remedial help in mathematics. Mr. Born also coached the boys and girls track and cross-country teams. When St. Paul’s closed, he began tutoring advanced math students at St. Mary’s School in Clinton and continued helping with cross country and track. He kept in touch with many of his students after they graduated, going to their high school sports events or theater productions, even corresponding with them when they went on to college.

His home and family were the center of his life. Mr. Born loved traveling with his family. With the help of a small travel trailer, they visited 33 states. His main hobbies were running, bicycling, and photography. Mr. Born was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Whitesboro.

Surviving are his four children and their spouses: David and Robin Born of Ithaca; Beth and Bill LaRock of Leesburg, Virginia; Patty and Peter Southcott of Watertown; and Frank and Theresa Born of Westernville, NY; as well as 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother Richard Born of Rochester, and sisters, Mary Buckley of Syracuse and Barbara McCann of Chittenango.
