John A. MacLean
Holland Patent

John Alexander “Sandy” MacLean of Park Avenue, Holland Patent, New York died on October 3, 2019 at the MVHS Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Utica, New York.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1929 to the late John A. and Josie M. (MacLeod) MacLean of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, he came to Cranston, Rhode Island as a boy and lived most of his life in Cranston and Warwick, R.I. until retirement, when he moved to central New York. He was married for 69 years to Patricia Louise (Baldwin) MacLean, and they were the parents of four children: Bonnie MacLean (and Douglas) Churcher of Holland Patent, NY, John A. MacLean, Jr. of North Providence, Rhode Island, Douglas M. (and Katherine Sherlock) MacLean of Foster, Rhode Island, and Diane MacLean (and Ralph) Boumenot of Warwick, Rhode Island. In addition to his wife and children John is survived by five beloved grandchildren: Jessica Diane Mack, Amanda Evans (Mack) Marquard, Malcolm Paul MacLean, Graham Alexander MacLean, and Duncan Charles MacLean, and two great-grandchildren, Miles Louis Marquard and Leo Evans Marquard.

John’s three siblings, Kenneth T. MacLean of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Marion (MacLean) Silberman of Warwick, Rhode Island, and his twin sister, Mae (MacLean) Jennings of Atlanta, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him. John was proud of his Nova Scotia and Scottish roots and was able to visit both of those beautiful locations during his life.

John was a lifelong volunteer in civil rights organizations, little league coaching, soup kitchens, food pantries, and church activities. In retirement, he served as President of Hope House, Utica, New York, as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Holland Patent, as Moderator for the Foothills Rural Community Ministry Council, Holland Patent, and as a member of the Holland Patent Lions Club. A successful printer and business forms salesman for much of his career, John was active for many years in the Rhode Island Data Processing Management Association (DPMA).

John will be remembered as a loving husband and father and a compassionate friend to all. His lifelong belief in quiet acts of kindness both large and small is the legacy that he leaves with all who knew him.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on October 26 at 2:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Holland Patent. In John’s memory, donations may be made to Hope House, PO Box 161, Utica, NY 13503 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, IL 60601.
