Obituary for Wasyl Prylepa

Wasyl Prylepa
Utica
1934-2018

Wasyl Prylepa, 84, of N. Utica, has gone to be with the Lord on Dec. 30, 2018.

Born on Oct. 9, 1934 in Pische, Wolyn region of Ukraine to the late Martin and Martha Prylepa. He was the youngest of five siblings. His family left Ukraine during WWII, first moving to Germany, then to Venezuela and immigrating to Utica in 1955.

Wasyl joined the Ukrainian Orthodox church where he met his future wife—Valentina Zehur. They married on Sept. 20, 1958 and shared a happy long union of 60 years.

He loved driving fast cars and watching Auto Racing. His first car was a stick shift Ford T-Bird! After working 33 years as a mechanic he retired in 1989. Retirement was a fun time—he joined the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and became an avid, talented golfer playing in 2 leagues.

Wasyl was active in his church community. He was one of the original pierogi makers in the Old Big Hall known as the “Holy Rollers” for rolling out dough to sell pierogies for Holy Cross and on special occasions for St. Volodymyr Church. He loved getting together with his family at holidays, bringing Kielbasa for all to enjoy while toasting his favorite drink and telling stories of life in Ukraine and Venezuela. He will be dearly missed.

Wasyl is survived by his beloved wife Valentina; sister-in-law Mary Prylepa; her family; George & Irene Czornyj; Michael & Debra Czornyj; Paul & Joan Czornyj; Helen & William Sherman; grandnieces, grandnephews, and family in Europe. He was predeceased by his brothers Jochym, George, Gregory, and sister Maria Czornyj.

The family will honor Wasyl’s life on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Dimbleby Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Whitesboro. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Church, 296 Genesee St. His funeral mass will be offered by Rev. M. Bundz and Rev. I. Semko. Interment will take place in St. Volodymyr Cemetery, Whitesboro.
